Chan is a way of life that encourages mental clarity, compassion to all beings, and wisdom that comes from putting down our baggage and neuroses and seeing things as they really are.
Meditation is the fundamental practice. Chan Buddhism is called “the Meditation School”. Chan is a transliteration of the Sanskrit word “dhyana” which means meditation. There are two aspects. Calming the mind and insight into the nature of the mind. Without calming and stabilizing the mind, insight is very difficult. Without insight, calming is just relaxation.
Silent Illumination (Mozhao Chan) is the practice of being fully present with our experience.
Listening Meditation (Guanyin Chan) is the practice of concentration and observation through listening to sounds.
This is the tradition I teach in. If you want to learn more, sent me a message.
